What I Wore: Printed Pants

I'm not a huge fan of pant suits on women. For some reason they're just not my thing. So for a meeting earlier this week I wanted to keep my look fun, young and still professional. I opted for my new favorite printed pants from Banana Republic and a classic blouse and blazer. And to add a little color to my monochrome look I chose one of my go to lipsticks, NARS's Never Say Never with fresh's Sugar Lip Balm as a gloss.

Shirt // The Limited
Pants // Banana Republic
Blazer // The Limited
Shoes // Enzo Angiolini
Sunglasses // Target
Watch // Michael Kors
Earrings // Tiffany's
Bag // Michael Kors
Lipstick combo // NARS, Never Say Never and fresh Sugar Lip Balm

This look is fresh, youthful and still shows my personality while remaining professional which is exactly what I wanted.

As a little bonus, I've been eating lunch by Lake Shore Drive almost everyday for the past 2 weeks. Here's a snap of my view.

I don't think it gets much better than that! Have a great day!

What I Wore: Birthday Dinner

I recently rang in my 27th birthday -- probably the first year I've felt a little nostalgic for my youth. I know I'm still (technically) in my mid-20s, but I now feel that I'm on the higher side of my 20s and maybe now is a good time to figure out what I am doing with myself. I mean, a need a solid plan before 30, right? Also, I just bought a convertible. Does that mean I'm having an early mid-life crisis, or a late quarter-life crisis???

Anyways ... Back to what I do know. Clothes.

I celebrated my birthday in the 'Bu at Geoffrey's Malibu where I've rang in my last three birthdays. I wore my favorite Flynn Skye maxi (perfectly Malibu-chic) and a black lace kimono with Chanel red lipstick -- which has been my favorite accessory all summer -- for a pop of color against the black and white patterns.

Here's what I wore:

Dress: Flynn Skye; Kimono: Nordstrom BP.

Hand chain: Nordstrom.

Love the back on this dress. Ignore my slightly imperfect back, though.

The sunset view at Geoffrey's. No place better to spend your birthday. Or any dinner for that matter.

Katie

What I Wore: Lunch Date

I had an insatiable craving for tacos the other day that could only be filled with a trip to Blue Plate Taco in Santa Monica. I opted for a comfy chic look with track shorts and a swing tank, an outfit I have been wearing a lot of this summer. There's nothing quite like summer in Santa Monica -- especially along Ocean Drive, and this outfit is easy, breezy and fun. And it's perfect for a day at the beach if you don't plan to swim.

Here's what I wore:

Shorts: Juicy Couture; Tank: Nordstrom; Sandals: Tory Burch.

Sunglasses: Ray Ban.

Love, love, love track shorts this summer.
The perfect summer lunch at Blue Plate Taco.

Katie

Girls On Location: Nashville

I recently got back from a nine-day trip -- first to Nashville and then Los Angeles. I was flipping through my phone and saw all these photos I took in Nashville -- which is such a fun town btw. BBQ, live country bands and fried EVERYTHING. Heaven. However, now that I'm back, it's time for me to start using some detox masks to rid my skin of all the after effects of the fried chicken ... totally worth it though.

Here's my Nashville visit in photos:

The Broadway Drag.

Praline heaven at Savannah Candy Kitchen on Broadway.

Great view of the river, and, of course, it has a stage.
Hermitage Hotel.

Natalie's 10 Must Have Summer Makeup Products

I am not a morning person. At.All. If you try to talk to me before 8:15 a.m. you'll most likely just get a very caveman-esque grunt in response. That being said, I love doing my makeup and getting ready in the morning. I know that it's a solid 20 minutes, at least, that I have to myself where I can relax.

I don't know if it's because it's summer, or I'm getting older (read: lazy), or have found the perfect few, but I've really narrowed down my beauty routine. A few years ago I was all about a smokey eye everyday, all day. And lately I've been of the thought that less is more. Not only does it take me less time, but I also feel a little more refreshed not wearing a ton of products.

Here are the few that have made it onto my face on a daily basis:

  1. Revlon Colorstay Whipped Creme Foundation, 150 - Buff
  2. NARS Radiant Creamy Concealer, Chantilly
  3. Urban Decay Original Eyeshadow Primer Potion
  4. Urban Decay Eyeshadow, Virgin
  5. Maybelline, Eyestudio Gel Eyeliner, Blackest Black
  6. Maybelline Waterproof Full 'n Soft Mascara, Very Black
  7. Rimmel Stay Matte Pressed Powder, Transparent
  8. Tarte Amazonian Clay 12-Hour Blush, Blissful
  9. NARS Velvet Matte Lip Pencil, Roman Holiday
  10. Fresh, Sugar Lip Treatment
  11. Because everyone needs an extra - and I don't use this every day: Anastasia Brow Wiz, Taupe

I apply them in that order, so not tutorial needed! There isn't one of these products that I don't love. They're long lasting and good quality, and none of them are outrageously priced. Doing my makeup usually takes between 10-15 minutes, but I really take my time and enjoy the process of getting ready.

What I love most about my makeup is how fresh it looks. None of the products get orange or change colors throughout the day, so I know that I'm going to look mostly the same at the end of the day. My foundation gives me a nice healthy glow without being oily (even though I do use an oil sheet midway through the day).

What are your favorite summer products this year? I'm always looking for more and new suggestions!

Till next time,

1 Year Blogaversary!

It's our 1 year Blogaversary here at Girls&City and we are so excited to be sharing it with you. What started out as a crazy idea over drinks has turned into something Katie and I both love. We have done more this year with Girls&City than either of us expected and we can't wait to see where we will go in the next. But I can tell you it's going to be awesome!

Katie is in Nashville this week for work so I'm flying solo this week for the celebrations. But when she gets back we will have a proper girls night out and of course share it with you.

Thank you for all of your support and comments over the last year. It's been so much fun getting to interact with you!

Cheers to year #2!

Book Club: July & August Selection

I was struggling to find our next book for book club, and then it happened. I was reading the prologue last night while making dinner with Mr. and I got hooked. I mean, it's good! Our next selection is Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children by Ransom Riggs.

Here's the Amazon.com synopsis:

A mysterious island.

An abandoned orphanage.

A strange collection of very curious photographs.

It all waits to be discovered in Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children, an unforgettable novel that mixes fiction and photography in a thrilling reading experience. As our story opens, a horrific family tragedy sets sixteen-year-old Jacob journeying to a remote island off the coast of Wales, where he discovers the crumbling ruins of Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children. As Jacob explores its abandoned bedrooms and hallways, it becomes clear that the children were more than just peculiar. They may have been dangerous. They may have been quarantined on a deserted island for good reason. And somehow—impossible though it seems—they may still be alive.

I'm only a few chapters in and I love it! I'm thinking this will be one of my favorite books this year. I have a tendency to read a lot (I'm averaging a book a week), so to keep up with what's on my bookshelf, follow me on Instagram to see my #bookoftheweek selections. I'm always looking for suggestions, so feel free to leave your favorites in the comments below!

We will discuss Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children on September 1st. I hope you enjoy this selection. It also has a sequel that I'm excited to pick up: Hollow City

Happy Reading!

4th of July Shenanigans

I had a fabulous holiday weekend and I hope you did too! I took Monday off so I had an extra long weekend which was really quite nice. Here's a look at what I was up to:

Thursday- Having gotten off of work early Mr. and I stopped for lunch at Chipolte and I got a hair cut.

Then we headed off to the drive-in in West Chicago. This is one of my favorite summertime activities. I love packing a picnic, sitting under stars and watching 2 good movies. One of the best parts is that you get to see 2 movies for $10 a person. So much better than going to a normal theater! The night we were there, they were playing the new Transformers movie and 22 Jump Street. Both we really good and we had a fantastic time.

Movies start at sun down and play back to back with a 15 minute intermission. They have a playground for the kids, a grill if you want to bring your own food and a pretty decent concession stand. I suggest bringing bug spray and a blanket (we wished we brought 2).

Friday- Oh the 4th of July... It's one of Mr.'s favorite holidays, so him and his family go all out. Lots of food, lots of fireworks and a whole ton of fun.

My sisters joined in for the first time this year and it was great having them there!

Thomas wanted to join in on our very competitive bags tournament.

Karlie's a diva!

Katherine and I did a pretty good job going head to head!

I couldn't have asked for a better group to send the weekend with!

He calls these my "bitch" sunglasses. But I think he secretly likes wearing them!

And we arm wrestled. The biggest vs the smallest. Take a guess who won?

Sunday- I love Ravinia. I don't go nearly as much as I'd like to, but it's always a good time when I do. My brother was in town performing at Ravinia so Mr., the girls and I packed a picnic and headed over. We lucked out with the weather, as it was supposed to rain, but didn't. We had a great time eating, drinking and walking around. That and seeing our brother is always nice! It was just the way to end a busy weekend. I had Monday off, but sat around doing not much of anything which was just what the doctor ordered.

I hope you had as great a weekend as I did! It makes me want to have more holiday weekends like this... But then again, I don't really need an excuse to eat, drink and be merry!

Now it's back to the grind of the normal work week... I'm pushing through!

Till next time,
Natalie
